WordPress 2.6 Upgrade Hickups
As all users of WordPress likely discovered today (or will soon) the version 2.6 is out and ready for instal. As usual, it’s a pretty easy process. You have to be careful not to overwrite your wp_content folder and you have to make some minor changes to the wp_config file, but beyond that it’s simple. HOWEVER, one rather critical element of the upgrade wasn’t mentioned in the documentation: you must clear your WordPress cookies before trying to log in again or you’ll get stuck in a login loop that never takes you to the admin area of your blog. Kinda critical. Luckily lots of people are already blogging about this issue, so finding the fix is a snap. Maybe you’re even seeing it here for the first time.
Since I’m a Mac user on Safari it was easy enough to view my cookies (preferences -> security -> show cookies) and use Spotlight the built-in Spotlight search to delete only cookies tagged with the word WordPress. Dumping all my cookies would have been a major bitch, but luckily Safari allows for easy, targeted cookie deletion.
So, there you have it. Good luck updating! The new version has some very nice new features.
