Chamber Music Northwest

Tags:, , , , .

Attended Chamber Music Northwest last night. The performances were excellent. The theme was “French Favorites” and included a couple of pieces featuring harp. Of particular interest was Maurice Ravel’s Introduction and Allegro for Harp, Flute, Clarinet and Strings. The show didn’t go off without some hiccups. The originally scheduled pianist injured his wrist and was replaced by Shai Wosner, who put on an excellent show. Unfortunately two cell phones went off during the concert. Very annoying. Other than that it was a fun evening.

Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go

Tags:, , , , .

A good friend and former co-worker Dale Basye made his auspicious debut this week as the next JK Rowling – or so I’m sure he hopes. His tween-targeted book Heck: Where the Bad Kids Go is the story of two siblings who find themselves in a sort of supernatural reform school. Think middle school populated by demons both mythical and historical. Lizzy Borden, Blackbeard and Richard Nixon figure into the story, as do a whole host of others. The book features fantastic illustrations by Bob Dob. Do yourself (and your kids) a favor and go grab a copy today! Available now at fine Internet browsers near you… and in every bookstore across the nation. It’s published by Random House after all. Congrats, Dale!

Blogging by iPhone

Tags:, , .

It’s here! WordPress for iPhone just hit the Apple iTunes App Store. This is exactly the application I was waiting for. It’s a lot more full-featured than I expected it to be. You can do practically every essential posting operation right from your iPhone… and that’s exactly what I’m doing right now.

WordPress 2.6 Upgrade Hickups

Tags:, , .

As all users of WordPress likely discovered today (or will soon) the version 2.6 is out and ready for instal. As usual, it’s a pretty easy process. You have to be careful not to overwrite your wp_content folder and you have to make some minor changes to the wp_config file, but beyond that it’s simple. HOWEVER, one rather critical element of the upgrade wasn’t mentioned in the documentation: you must clear your WordPress cookies before trying to log in again or you’ll get stuck in a login loop that never takes you to the admin area of your blog. Kinda critical. Luckily lots of people are already blogging about this issue, so finding the fix is a snap. Maybe you’re even seeing it here for the first time.

Since I’m a Mac user on Safari it was easy enough to view my cookies (preferences -> security -> show cookies) and use Spotlight the built-in Spotlight search to delete only cookies tagged with the word WordPress. Dumping all my cookies would have been a major bitch, but luckily Safari allows for easy, targeted cookie deletion.

So, there you have it. Good luck updating! The new version has some very nice new features.

iPhone 2.0 firmware ROX!

Tags:, , .

The thing about the iPhone is that it’s been more or less crippled for the last year. Obviously the iPhone (and iPod Touch) is more than a simple communications device. It’s a full fledged computing platform. But until third party applications were available for it, the device failed to live up to its potential. Now, with the release of the 2.0 firmware and the opening of the Apple Applications Store, it’s finally a complete product. I’ve already downloaded a half dozen new applications for it. My iPhone is now the PDA/phone/media player I’ve wanted it to be from day one.
